Feature film set in 1980s, based on the novel by David Nicholls, in which a working class student, from Essex becomes a member of Bristol’s University Challenge team and navigates his first year at University.
In designing the costumes, Charlotte purposely bled colour out of the clothes to give a more period feel, but she avoided pastiche costumes, as there was enough humour already in the script. The main principal costumes were intentionally kept naturalistic and not overly dominant, as opposed to the background supporting artists which were more distinctively 80’s to subtly inject a general period feel into the production. As James McAvoy’s character develops from being a working class teenager to an academic student his costume changes to reflect this transformation.
Shot on location in Bristol, London and Essex.
